New Delhi: Virat Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has declared his retirement from Test cricket just over a month ahead of the tour to England. At 36 years old, Kohli made this announcement shortly after fellow cricketer Rohit Sharma retired from the format. The news of Kohli’s decision to retire, which he communicated to the BCCI, caused a stir early Saturday morning.
Although he has not yet reached the milestone of 10,000 runs, Kohli believes it is the right moment to step away from Test cricket, having accumulated 9,230 runs in 23 matches at an average of 46.8, making him India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in Tests, following legends Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.
Kohli expressed his sentiments on social media, reflecting on his 14-year journey in Test cricket, stating that it has profoundly shaped him and imparted invaluable lessons. He acknowledged the personal significance of playing in whites, emphasizing the quiet struggles and memorable moments that have left a lasting impact on him. As he transitions away from this format, Kohli conveyed a sense of gratitude for the game, his teammates, and the supporters who have been part of his journey.
His retirement signifies that the upcoming Sydney Test against Australia will be his final appearance, leaving India with a less experienced squad for the England Tests, especially with the absence of other seasoned players. With Kohli now retired from both T20Is and Tests, he will concentrate solely on ODI cricket, where he remains a dominant figure.
