Flood, lakes burst after rain in Tamil Nadu
Southern districts have been experiencing heavy rains for the last two days due to the formation of a cyclonic circulation over Cape Comarin, the coastal area of Tamil Nadu near the Indian Ocean.
Palayamkottai received 260 mm of rain till 5:30 pm on Sunday. Whereas 26 cm of rain was recorded on Monday morning. On the other hand, 17 cm of rainfall was recorded in Kanyakumari.
Whereas in Thoothukudi district, taluka Srivaikuntam received 525 mm rainfall. Tiruchendur in Tuticorin district received nearly two feet of water in just 15 hours.
Rivers and lakes in Kovilpatti are overflowing. Two lakes burst and their repair work is underway. Because of the flood-like situation, 250 personnel of NDRF, and SDRF have been deployed in the Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Tenkasi districts.
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday declared a holiday in all schools in the four districts Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi. Banks were also ordered to close.
No relief in Tamil Nadu for the next two days, possibility of rain
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heavy rain at one or two places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu on December 18-19.
Apart from this, when rainwater started flowing out of the river in the Kousalipatti and Inam Maniyachi areas, sandbags and JCB machines were used to stop the water.
