Stampede at Goa’s Lairai Devi temple leaves 6 dead, over 15 injured

Goa: At least six individuals lost their lives and more than 15 sustained injuries during a stampede at the Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao, Goa, on Saturday, as reported by ANI, citing North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal.

The incident took place in the early hours at the Sree Lairai Devi temple, where thousands of devotees from Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka had gathered for the annual festival, according to news agency PTI.

A senior police official stated that the precise cause of the incident will be established through an investigation. State health minister Vishwajit Rane confirmed that at least 30 individuals were injured, with eight in critical condition, and two of the injured have been transferred to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim. Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant expressed his deep sorrow regarding the Lairai Zatra stampede in Shirgaon and pledged support to the affected families. In a post on X, he stated, ‘I am deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the Lairai Zatra in Shirgaon this morning. I visited the hospital to meet the injured and have assured all possible support to the affected families. I am personally monitoring the situation to ensure that every necessary measure is being taken. Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji spoke with me and took detailed stock of the situation, offering his full support during this difficult time.’

The temple, renowned for its unique blend of northern and southern architectural styles, hosts the Shirgao Jatra every May, a festival that includes a traditional fire-walking ritual and draws thousands of devotees. Villagers from surrounding areas, including Maulingem, engage in religious rituals and offerings dedicated to Goddess Lairai throughout the day, as noted on the Goa Tourism website. As midnight approaches during the Lairai Jatra, devotees partake in an energetic circular dance within the temple, rhythmically clashing sticks to the beat of drums.
