REGARDING THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE GULMARG FASHION SHOW

A video that gained widespread attention depicted models walking on a snow-covered runway at the Elle India fashion show organized by Shivan and Narresh. This video was initially shared on Elle’s Instagram Threads account but was subsequently removed due to the ensuing controversy.

Numerous political leaders from Kashmir and social media users criticized the event as “obscene,” given its occurrence during the holy month of Ramzan.

The office of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah acknowledged the “shock and anger” surrounding the event and mandated that a report be prepared within 24 hours, which would inform any subsequent actions.

Earlier today, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly experienced turmoil over the Gulmarg fashion show, with several politicians, including Abdullah, condemning the “obscene” event and asserting that it offended religious sentiments.

As the House convened for the day, members from the ruling National Conference (NC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and two Independents raised concerns and called for an investigation into how such an event could occur while individuals were observing a full day of Ramzan fasting.

In his remarks, the Chief Minister stated that his administration had already initiated an inquiry into the incident.

“The private event that took place in Gulmarg has offended the sentiments of the public. Such occurrences should not take place at any time throughout the year. I wish to clarify that the government had no involvement in the fashion show. The organizers did not request any permission from us. It was a private event held at a hotel,” he remarked.

“If any regulations have been breached, the issue should be referred to the police. However, I want to emphasize that my government is not implicated,” he continued.

In contrast, the opposition BJP criticized the NC, PDP, and clerics for inciting controversy over the fashion show, asserting that the “outrage was unjustified.”
