Security beefed up for Ram Navami in Mumbai, UP, other states; cops on high alert

New Delhi: Security measures have been significantly enhanced across multiple states in anticipation of Ram Navami processions. Thousands of police officers have been assigned to monitor the events, with the use of drones and CCTV cameras to ensure safety in areas deemed sensitive.

In Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, a pivotal site for Ram Navami celebrations, authorities have intensified security protocols. This includes the implementation of traffic management systems, firefighting resources, drones, and surveillance cameras.

DGP Prashant Kumar has instructed local law enforcement to pinpoint sensitive locations and work in conjunction with religious leaders to maintain order. Given the expected influx of devotees, additional security provisions have been established at railway and bus terminals.

In Mumbai, over 13,500 police personnel have been mobilized, comprising 11,000 constables, 2,500 officers, and 51 assistant commissioners of police. Furthermore, nine platoons from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and other specialized units have been deployed to uphold law and order.

These heightened security measures are a direct response to recent communal disturbances, including the violence that occurred in Nagpur on March 17, as well as the anticipated large gatherings during the festivities. Drones will be utilized in areas such as Malvani and Malad to oversee the processions.

In Kolkata, security preparations have also been intensified, with over 50 rallies, including five major processions, scheduled for Sunday. The police have mapped out the routes and increased security presence, with forces remaining deployed until April 7.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma conducted site visits on Saturday, engaging with senior officers to evaluate the security arrangements. He indicated that an additional 5,000 police personnel may be deployed in the city to ensure public safety.

In Odisha, security has been heightened in sensitive areas such as Sambalpur, Cuttack, Balasore, and Bhadrak. Special measures have been implemented in Sambalpur, which experienced a communal clash in 2023.
