Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil
Rio de Janeiro: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil on Monday, marking the second phase of his three-nation tour, during which he will participate in the G20 Summit. His arrival in the South American nation followed a “productive” visit to Nigeria, where he engaged in bilateral discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and connected with the Indian community.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced PM Modi’s arrival in Brazil through a post on X, stating, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 Brazil Summit.” The post also included images of PM Modi’s reception at the airport.
Upon his arrival, PM Modi expressed on his official X account, “I have landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the G20 Summit. I anticipate engaging discussions and productive talks with various world leaders.” In Brazil, he will take part in the 19th G20 Summit as a member of the Troika, which includes India, Brazil, and South Africa.
Among the leaders attending the summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19 will be Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden. In the final segment of his trip, Modi is scheduled to visit Guyana from November 19 to 21 at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This visit will mark the first time in over 50 years that an Indian prime minister has traveled to Guyana.
In his departure statement on Saturday, PM Modi remarked, “This year, Brazil has built upon India’s legacy. I look forward to meaningful discussions aligned with our vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.’ I will also seize the opportunity to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation with several other leaders.” The induction of the 55-nation African Union as a permanent member of the G20 and the successful production of a leaders’ declaration amid significant divisions over the Ukraine conflict were notable achievements of India’s G20 presidency last year.
During his trip to Nigeria, Prime Minister Modi was honored with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), the nation’s highest award, making him the second foreign dignitary to receive this prestigious recognition. This accolade marks the 17th international award bestowed upon PM Modi by a foreign nation. The only other recipient of this honor is Queen Elizabeth II. This visit by PM Modi to Nigeria represents the first occasion in 17 years that an Indian prime minister has traveled to the West African nation.
