The fatalities occurred primarily in the severely affected Poonch district, where an additional 25 individuals were reported injured.
Furthermore, 10 injuries were recorded in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, and three more in Rajouri district, officials stated. Reports indicate that tensions escalated between India and Pakistan after India conducted missile strikes on nine terrorist locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir late Tuesday. India confirmed it targeted these sites without affecting any Pakistani military installations, emphasizing its restraint in choosing targets and execution methods, according to the Ministry of Defence.
In response, Pakistan engaged in indiscriminate firing, including artillery shelling, from positions along the Line of Control and International Border opposite Jammu and Kashmir, as reported by Indian Army sources. Earlier reports indicated that three civilians were killed due to Pakistani shelling, which was described as indiscriminate. Heavy shelling was also noted in various sectors, including Mankote, Krishna Ghati, and Shahpur in Poonch, as well as Laam, Manjakote, and Gambeer Brahmana in Rajouri, along with Karnah and Uri in the Kupwara and Baramulla districts of north Kashmir.
Indian security forces retaliated, and the cross-border shelling continued as the latest updates came in, with officials stating that the Pakistani shelling forced residents to seek refuge in underground bunkers. This marked the 13th consecutive night of unprovoked firing along the borders in Jammu and Kashmir, amid rising tensions following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily tourists.
