Earthquake In Delhi-NCR: A powerful earthquake struck the Delhi-NCR region on Friday, causing tremors in several areas, including Noida and Ghaziabad, which are adjacent to Delhi. According to reports, the earthquake’s epicenter was identified in Burma, the capital of Myanmar, where the National Center for Seismology recorded a magnitude of 7.2. It is important to note that a previous earthquake occurred in China on March 26, registering a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale. This quake hit Yongqing County in Langfang, Hebei Province, North China, at 1:21 AM local time, with its epicenter located 20 kilometers below the surface, as reported by the China Earthquake Network Center.
In a related event, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake severely affected Thailand and neighboring Myanmar, leading to the collapse of a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok on Friday. Thai emergency services reported that two individuals have been confirmed dead, while an unknown number of others remain trapped under the debris of the collapsed structure.
Dramatic footage shared on social media captured the moment the multi-story building in Bangkok, topped with a crane, crumbled into a cloud of dust, prompting screams and panic among onlookers. According to news agency AFP, the 30-story skyscraper, intended for government offices, collapsed, entombing 43 workers.
Recent updates regarding the Myanmar and Thailand earthquake indicate that Bangkok has been designated a disaster area following the significant quake originating in Myanmar. The building in northern Bangkok was reduced to a chaotic mass of rubble and twisted metal within moments after the 7.7-magnitude earthquake, which had its epicenter in Myanmar. Additionally, in the Sagaing region, located just southwest of Mandalay, a 90-year-old bridge collapsed, and several sections of the highway connecting Mandalay to Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, sustained damage.
Authorities informed The Associated Press that they were responding to an incident near Bangkok’s renowned Chatuchak Market, but they did not have immediate details regarding the number of workers present at the site during the collapse.
Following the significant earthquake, the Stock Exchange of Thailand halted all trading activities for the afternoon session on Friday.
In Naypyitaw, the capital, the quake caused damage to religious shrines, resulting in some structures collapsing and affecting several homes.
Mild tremors were also experienced in Kolkata and Imphal. The earthquake’s epicenter was located in central Myanmar, approximately 50 kilometers east of Monywa. Residents in Kolkata and nearby areas reported feeling slight tremors and observed wall hangings moving during the seismic event.
In Manipur, the tremors induced panic among the inhabitants of Thangal Bazar in Imphal, where numerous older multi-storey buildings are situated. However, police reported that no damage has been recorded thus far.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern regarding the severe earthquake and stated that India is prepared to provide any necessary assistance to the affected countries. “I am troubled by the situation following the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. I am praying for the safety and well-being of all individuals,” Modi posted on ‘X’. “India is ready to extend all possible support. I have instructed our authorities to remain on standby and have also directed the Ministry of External Affairs to maintain communication with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” he added.
A magnitude 7.3 earthquake was felt across various regions of Bangladesh, including Dhaka and Chattogram, on Friday, although no casualties have been reported to date.
