Missing in Manipur: Serious political intent
New Delhi: It has been evident since the onset of the current unrest and violence last year that Biren Singh is a contributing factor to the issues plaguing the state; however, the Central government has continued to protect him. The National People’s Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, has withdrawn its support from Biren Singh’s administration. A total curfew has been enforced in Manipur following public protests triggered by the discovery of three decomposed bodies, including those of children who were taken hostage.
An enraged mob has vandalized the properties of the Chief Minister and other elected officials. In the ensuing chaos, the mob clashed with security forces, resulting in the death of a 21-year-old identified as K. Thouba, along with several injuries. Internet services have been suspended in Imphal, Bishnupur, and Churachandpur.
Meitei community’s Demand
The apex civil society organization of the Meitei community has issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding decisive action. Despite the presence of a unified command structure in Manipur, peace has not been restored in the past 18 months. Previously, six police stations were placed under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for a brief period. The Assam Rifles and additional security forces have been deployed in the region.
Manipur is engulfed in turmoil. The violence ignited on May 3, 2023, and has persisted for the last 18 months. Both the central and state governments appear indifferent to the situation, seemingly complacent in the face of ongoing violence and bloodshed.
Lok Sabha MP Bimol has raised this issue vigorously in Parliament. To date, approximately 65,000 individuals have been displaced, and over 270 lives have been lost, leading to a situation akin to civil war in Manipur.
If the double-engine government continues to disregard the concerns of the people of Manipur, the residents of the region may ultimately seek a separate state, similar to the situation in Nagaland. A significant question arises regarding who is providing protection to Chief Minister Biren Singh, as the wiretaps suggest a broader implication concerning the violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities throughout Manipur.
