Karnataka slashes power tariffs for domestic and industrial connections

Bengaluru : On the same day that the Karnataka government raised milk prices by Rs 4 per litre, it also declared a reduction in power tariffs for domestic, commercial, and industrial users, as well as educational institutions and hospitals, by 10 paise per unit. However, there will be an increase of Rs 25 in the monthly fixed charges.

The new tariffs, which will take effect on April 1, were revealed on Thursday by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission. This marks the first implementation of a multi-year tariff system, which will govern tariff adjustments by various electricity supply companies over the next three years.

As a result of this revision, the cost per unit will decrease from Rs 5.90 to Rs 5.80 for the next two financial years. In the fiscal year 2027-28, the power tariff will be further reduced by five paise per unit, lowering the unit price to Rs 5.75.

Energy charges will see a reduction of Rs 1.6 per unit for low-tension industrial connections, 30 paise per unit for high-tension industrial connections, and Rs 2.05 per unit for high-tension commercial connections.

This reduction in unit costs is anticipated to lower monthly power bills by approximately Rs 50, depending on individual household consumption. Most households in the state benefit from the Gruha Jyothi scheme, which offers free electricity for usage up to 200 units.

Additionally, fixed charges, which account for infrastructure maintenance and other expenses, will rise from Rs 120 to Rs 145 per month.
