“Indian Culture, Family System Degraded”: Police Case Against Ranveer Allahbadia

Mumbai: A new FIR has been lodged against podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, YouTuber Apoorva Makhija, and comedian Samay Raina, among others, in connection with the controversy surrounding inappropriate comments made during the “India’s Got Latent” roast show. The Mumbai Police initiated this FIR following a complaint that accused these social media figures of undermining the Indian family structure and offending religious sentiments.

The complainant, Sanmati Pandey, referenced Allahbadia’s provocative statement: “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?” He characterized marriage as a sacred institution and asserted that the podcaster’s comments were an affront to his religious convictions. The complaint further alleges that the YouTuber acted with malicious intent.

Additionally, the complaint highlights a statement made by Apoorva Makhija, known as The Rebel Kid, regarding dietary practices in Arunachal Pradesh. She reportedly stated, “People of Arunachal Pradesh eat dog meat even though I have never tasted it. I know because my friends eat it. They even eat their pets at times.” The complaint contends that such statements threaten the harmony of the Northeastern region.

Samay Raina is mentioned in the complaint as a member of the jury and involved in the production of the show, in addition to sharing videos on social media. The complaint also identifies YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani.

Sanmati Pandey has clarified that his phone number is associated with a YouTube channel that broadcasted the roast show; however, he did not participate in the creation of the content.

The controversy surrounding Allahbadia’s comments, which gained traction following the viral video from the show, shows no signs of abating. The Assam Police have initiated a case related to this matter, and a team from the state has traveled to Mumbai to assist in the investigation. Apoorva Mukhija visited the Khar police station today accompanied by her lawyer to provide her statement.

The National Commission for Women has voiced its concerns regarding Allahbadia’s statements and has summoned him along with others associated with the show for a hearing scheduled on February 17. The panel stated, “These comments, which have incited significant public outrage, undermine the dignity and respect that every individual deserves, especially in a society that values equality and mutual respect,” as noted by chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar.

The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has initiated legal proceedings under the Information Technology Act. Reports indicate that notices are being dispatched to at least 30 individuals associated with the show, requiring their appearance before the Cyber Cell to provide statements.

The issue has also been brought to the attention of Parliament. Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske has raised concerns regarding the inappropriate comments and has called for censorship of content on OTT platforms. Additionally, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has expressed her intention to address the matter in a parliamentary committee.

In the midst of this controversy, Allahbadia has publicly apologized, stating, “My comment was inappropriate and not humorous; comedy is not my strength, and I am here to express my regret.” He acknowledged a “lapse in judgment” and described his remarks as “not cool.”

The podcaster, who boasts millions of social media followers, has experienced a loss of approximately 50,000 followers since the controversy began.

Numerous celebrities have condemned Allahbadia’s comments, asserting that vulgarity is not comedic and criticizing his irresponsibility in making such remarks without considering their societal implications. Conversely, another group has argued that the outrage appears selective, suggesting that law enforcement should prioritize crime prevention rather than pursuing Allahbadia, particularly in light of his apology.
