In big Supreme Court move, judges’ asset details, appointment process made public

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has made the asset declarations of its judges available on its website, following a unanimous decision to enhance transparency. A statement from the court indicated that on April 1, 2025, the full court resolved to publicly disclose the asset statements of its judges by uploading them online.

The court is currently in the process of uploading the asset statements it has received, with additional statements to be added as they are submitted. Furthermore, the Supreme Court has detailed the entire appointment process for High Courts and itself on its website, outlining the roles of the High Court Collegium, input from state governments, and the Supreme Court Collegium’s considerations for public knowledge.

The website now includes information on appointments approved by the Supreme Court Collegium for high court judges from November 9, 2022, to May 5, 2025, detailing names, high courts, sources of recommendation, and special categories.

Additionally, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna’s asset details reveal he has ₹55.75 lakh in fixed deposits and bank accounts, along with ₹1.06 crore in his PPF account, and owns a two-bedroom DDA flat in South Delhi and a four-bedroom flat in the Commonwealth Games Village.

Additionally, he possesses a 56 percent stake in a four-bedroom apartment located in Gurugram, while his daughter owns the remaining 44 percent. He also has a share in a family home in Himachal Pradesh, which has historical significance dating back to before the partition. Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, set to become the Chief Justice of India on May 14, has ₹19.63 lakh in his bank accounts and ₹6.59 lakh in his Public Provident Fund account.

Furthermore, Justice Gavai has inherited a property in Amravati, Maharashtra, along with residential units in Mumbai and Delhi, as well as agricultural land in both Amravati and Nagpur. His total declared liabilities are ₹1.3 crore.
