Grenade attack on temple in Punjab’s Amritsar, no casualty

New Delhi: An explosion occurred outside the Thakur Dwara Temple in the Khandwala area of Amritsar during the early hours of Saturday, according to police reports. Fortunately, there were no injuries; however, the blast caused damage to the temple’s walls and shattered several window panes, instilling fear in the local community.

CCTV footage captured the incident, revealing two masked individuals arriving at the temple on a motorcycle. After a brief wait, one of them hurled an explosive device towards the temple at approximately 12:45 AM. The pair quickly fled the scene on their motorcycle.

Amritsar’s police commissioner, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, stated that the temple priest alerted the authorities about the explosion, prompting him and other senior officials to respond to the location. An investigation is currently underway, with efforts focused on apprehending the two suspects.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (West) Shivdarshan Singh, who was present at the scene, reported that a forensic team had gathered evidence from the site.

Kirandeep Singh Monu, a local leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal and an advocate, noted that the temple was established 25 years ago. He mentioned that the priest and his family were asleep in the temple complex at the time of the explosion.

Ravneet Singh Bittu, the Union Minister of State for Railways, condemned the attack on the Thakur Dwara Temple, criticizing the AAP government for its inability to prevent recurring explosions in the border city of Amritsar. He expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab in a post on X.

This incident follows a series of ten explosions that occurred outside police facilities in Punjab between November 2024 and February 2025, with the most recent blast taking place at a non-operational police chowki near the Fatehgarh Churian bypass in Amritsar district on February 3. Although there were no casualties from these blasts, they caused significant alarm in the border regions.

The mastermind behind the grenade attack sustained injuries during a confrontation with police in Batala on February 27.
