Gautam Adani indicted: White House reacts, ‘confident’ in navigating crisis

New Delhi: US prosecutors have accused Gautam Adani of participating in a scheme involving the payment of over $250 million in bribes to Indian officials in order to secure solar contracts. The White House has acknowledged the allegations against Gautam Adani, the chairman of Adani Group, who faces indictment in New York for his involvement in an alleged multibillion-dollar bribery and fraud operation.

According to US prosecutors, Gautam Adani, along with seven other defendants, including his nephew Sagar Adani, allegedly conspired to pay approximately $265 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure contracts projected to generate $2 billion in profits over a span of 20 years, as well as to develop the largest solar power plant project in India.

During a press briefing on Thursday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed reporters that the administration is aware of the charges against Adani. Emphasizing the strong foundation of the US-India relationship, the White House spokesperson expressed confidence in the ability of the US to manage the ongoing situation related to the bribery allegations against Gautam Adani.

“We are indeed aware of these allegations, and I must direct you to the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and DOJ (Department of Justice) for further details regarding the specific allegations against the Adani Group,” stated Karine Jean-Pierre.
