Massive protest in UP’s Prayagraj
UPPSC protest: Protesters organized a sit-in at the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) headquarters on Monday in response to the recently announced examination schedule. Students in Prayagraj are expressing their discontent with the UPPSC’s decision to hold the Review Officer and Assistant Review Officer (RO-ARO) and Provincial Civil Services (PCS) preliminary examinations on separate dates. The students are advocating for a return to the UPPSC’s previous practice of conducting these examinations on a single day.
What is prompting the protests by UPPSC candidates in Prayagraj?
Aspirants for the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission in Prayagraj are insisting that the RO-ARO and PCS preliminary exams be scheduled for the same day to prevent confusion and promote fairness. The protests began following the commission’s announcement on November 5 regarding the scheduling of these examinations on different days and in various shifts.
According to the official notice, the RO-ARO preliminary examination is set to take place in three shifts on December 22 and 23, while the PCS preliminary examination will occur in two shifts on December 7 and 8. The exam schedule has incited significant anger among students and has attracted widespread criticism from candidates, leading to sit-ins and candlelight vigils as forms of protest against the commission.
Many of the demonstrators, including women, spent the night outdoors, while others who had returned home came back on Tuesday morning to continue their protest at the commission’s entrance. During the demonstration, students were observed holding placards with messages such as, “We will not retreat, we will remain united until we get justice,” and “One day, one exam.”
On Tuesday, the protesters were seen drumming and carrying an effigy of UPPSC Chairman Sanjay Shrinet, chanting slogans against him.
