‘Election Gandhis’: K Kavitha slams Congress leaders ‘absence’ during Waqf bill debate in Parliament

New Delhi: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Kavitha criticized Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for their absence during the debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament, asserting that it reflects a lack of commitment to safeguarding the rights of millions.

On Saturday, Kavitha remarked that the noticeable absence of the Gandhi siblings revealed their true character and denounced the irresponsibility exhibited by the Congress leadership.

“The people of Telangana have long recognized the true character of the Gandhi siblings. They travel across the country during election season with grand promises, yet when it comes to defending the rights of millions—particularly those of the minority community—they are conspicuously absent,” Kavitha stated, as reported by news agency ANI.

Kavitha further criticized Rahul Gandhi for allegedly neglecting to address an issue that impacts over 300 million people in India, especially within the Muslim community.

“Rahul Gandhi speaks of peace and promotes the idea of Mohabbat Ki Dukaan, so why did he not address this significant bill? He should have taken a stand. It is quite disappointing to witness the main opposition leader of our country failing to advocate for over 300 million citizens,” Kavitha expressed to ANI.

In response, Rahul Gandhi stated that the Waqf Bill poses a threat to Muslims and sets a dangerous precedent for targeting other communities in the future.

“The silence of both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi has not gone unnoticed by the minority community nationwide. The people of Telangana are aware of the theatrics of the Gandhis and understand that they will choose silence over advocating for people’s rights when there is no electoral benefit,” Kavitha claimed.

Kavitha also questioned Priyanka Gandhi’s absence, noting the disappointment felt by the entire minority community. “This is why we refer to them as Election Gandhis. If an election were to occur tomorrow, all three would be present and would have spoken on this matter,” she concluded.

Leadership transcends mere appearances; it is defined by being present during critical moments. The people of Telangana are discerning enough to recognize this performative politics. When the community sought representation, the ‘Election Gandhis’ were notably absent, she remarked.

On Friday, Congress MP Mohammad Jawed filed a petition with the Supreme Court contesting the legitimacy of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, asserting that it contravenes Constitutional principles. The petition argued that the bill imposes discriminatory restrictions on the Muslim community that are not applicable to the management of other religious endowments.
