Mumbai: Eknath Shinde, the leader of Shiv Sena, resigned from his position as the chief minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday, shortly after the ruling Mahayuti alliance secured a significant victory in the recent assembly elections. On Tuesday morning, Shinde met with Governor C P Radhakrishnan to submit his resignation. The governor requested that Shinde serve as caretaker chief minister until a new chief minister is appointed.
Reports indicate that BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde are competing for the chief ministerial position in Maharashtra. The BJP’s claim to this role has been strengthened by its performance in the assembly elections, where it emerged as the single-largest party, winning 132 seats.
Despite Shiv Sena securing only 57 seats, it has been advocating for the chief minister position, referencing the political arrangement of the NDA in Bihar, where Nitish Kumar serves as chief minister despite the BJP’s dominant role in the coalition.
Shiv Sena is advocating for Eknath Shinde to assume the chief minister role. Sheetal Mhatre, a spokesperson for the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, stated today that the Maratha community supports his continuation in the position. She emphasized the importance of Shinde remaining as chief minister in light of the upcoming local body elections in the state.
On Monday, Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske called for Eknath Shinde to be appointed as Maharashtra’s chief minister, asserting that the BJP should respond appropriately to criticisms regarding its treatment of allies.
