Assam: In light of increasing allegations of corruption, internal sabotage, and significant misconduct during the recent Panchayat elections, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has taken decisive measures by establishing a high-level Investigation Committee. This action highlights the party’s commitment to upholding internal discipline, transparency, and accountability.
Following instructions from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary responsible for Assam, Shri Jitendra Singh, the APCC has appointed seasoned Congress leader and former Union Minister Shri Paban Singh Ghatowar as the Chairperson of the Committee. The Committee is tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into all allegations made against party members concerning the electoral process.
Scope and authority of the committee
The Committee has been given a broad mandate, which encompasses:
- Investigating all complaints submitted to the Party regarding the Panchayat elections.
- Examining claims of irregularities in ticket distribution, alleged cash-for-ticket transactions, intentional walkovers to opposition candidates, unexplained withdrawals of nominations, and any other actions considered detrimental to the party.
- Assessing the level of involvement and accountability of the accused individuals.
- Summoning party members for inquiry sessions, with a clear directive that adherence to Committee summons takes precedence over any campaign activities.
The Committee is expected to deliver a comprehensive report of its findings to both the AICC General Secretary in charge and the APCC President, with a submission deadline set for May 7, 2025.
The APCC has reiterated that individuals found guilty of misconduct will face strict disciplinary measures, reinforcing its dedication to preserving the integrity of the party’s internal processes.
