Maharashtra: 43 new COVID-19 cases, active count breaches 200 mark

Mumbai: Maharashtra reported 43 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, increasing the total number of active cases in the state to 209, as per the health department. Data from the health department indicates that Mumbai recorded 35 new COVID-19 cases, while Pune noted 8 new cases.

300 COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra since January

Since January, Maharashtra has documented a total of 300 COVID-19 cases, with the monthly distribution as follows: January (1), February (1), March (0), April (4), and a significant surge in May (242), which constitutes 80 percent of all cases this year.

Mumbai alone has accounted for 248 cases, representing 82.67 percent of the state’s total infections.

Most COVID cases are mild in India

It is noteworthy that COVID-19 cases are gradually rising across the nation, with Kerala reporting the highest number of infections, followed by Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Delhi has also experienced a slight increase in cases recently.

However, the Union Health Ministry states that the majority of reported cases are mild and managed at home, with no signs of increased severity or transmissibility in the currently circulating variants. The Ministry has issued an advisory in light of the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases across various Indian states, urging citizens to stay calm but vigilant.

The ministry emphasized that a strong national surveillance system is operational through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)’s sentinel surveillance network, which continues to track respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19.

According to INSACOG data, one case of the newly emerging COVID-19 variant NB.1.8.1 and four cases of the LF.7 variant have been detected in India.

As of May 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) categorizes LF.7 and NB.1.8 subvariants as Variants Under Monitoring (VUMs), rather than Variants of Concern (VOCs) or Variants of Interest (VOIs). However, these variants are reportedly contributing to the increase in COVID cases in China and parts of Asia.
