New Delhi: The Opposition has expressed its complete support for the government in taking any necessary actions following the Pahalgam massacre that resulted in 26 fatalities and heightened tensions with Pakistan. After an all-party meeting this evening, where intelligence and government officials provided updates, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, stated, ‘All political parties have unanimously condemned this act, and the Opposition stands firmly behind the government in its response.’ ‘We aim to restore peace in Jammu and Kashmir as swiftly as possible,’ remarked Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. Mr. Gandhi is scheduled to visit Anantnag in Kashmir tomorrow, where the injured are being treated at the district hospital.
‘We are united with the Center in the battle against terrorism. The nation must confront this threat together. Leaders from all political parties have conveyed a message to the Prime Minister,’ said Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandopadhyay, who is seeking a meeting with PM Modi. On Sunday afternoon, 26 individuals lost their lives when terrorists from a Lashkar-e-Taiba splinter group opened fire on a group of unsuspecting tourists in the picturesque meadows of Baisaran, often referred to as ‘mini Switzerland.’
Among the deceased, one was a Nepali national, while the others hailed from 14 different states across India. The government has pledged to retaliate, initiating several non-military measures, including the indefinite suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, closure of the Attari border, and revocation of visas for all Pakistani nationals currently in India, although military action has not been ruled out. Surgical and air strikes were previously executed on terror camps along the Line of Control following the Uri and Pulwama attacks.
However, sources indicate that military options were not discussed during the meeting. In a further escalation, the government has canceled all visas, including medical visas, for Pakistani nationals in India, effective Sunday.
