New Delhi: Four individuals lost their lives, and several others are feared to be trapped beneath the rubble of a building that collapsed in the Mustafabad area of Delhi during the early hours of Saturday, an event captured on CCTV.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police were dispatched to the scene to conduct rescue operations on Saturday morning.
Sandeep Lamba, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for the North East District, confirmed that four individuals had died from their injuries after being rescued, while others remain trapped. “The incident occurred around 3 a.m. this morning… 14 individuals were rescued, but four of them later succumbed… it was a four-storey building… the rescue operation is ongoing. We believe 8 to 10 people are still trapped,” DCP Lamba stated, as reported by news agency ANI.
CCTV footage released by ANI documented the tragic event.
Rajendra Atwal, Divisional Fire Officer, mentioned that the call regarding the building collapse was received at approximately 2:50 a.m. on Saturday. “We received a report of a house collapse around 2:50 a.m. Upon arrival, we discovered that the entire structure had fallen, trapping individuals beneath the debris… NDRF and the Delhi Fire Service are actively engaged in rescue efforts,” he explained.
The building collapse occurred shortly after Delhi experienced a sudden shift in weather on Friday, with heavy rain and thunderstorms impacting various areas of the city overnight.
A witness reported that “two men and two daughters-in-law” resided in the collapsed house. “The eldest daughter-in-law has three children, and the second daughter-in-law also has three children… at this moment, we have no information about their whereabouts,” the witness told ANI.
In a related incident, one person was killed and two others injured last week when a wall of an under-construction building collapsed near the Madhu Vihar police station during a severe dust storm. Authorities indicated that the wall was part of a six-storey building under construction.
At approximately 7 PM, a PCR call was received. Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that the wall of a six-story building under construction had fallen due to the dust storm. Tragically, one individual lost their life, and two others sustained injuries. The injured parties were subsequently transported to the hospital, as reported by Vineet Kumar, the additional deputy commissioner of police (East), according to ANI.
