Congress To Challenge Waqf Bill “Very Soon” In Supreme Court

New Delhi: On Friday, the Congress party announced its intention to challenge the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Supreme Court in the near future. The Bill received parliamentary approval early Friday after the Rajya Sabha endorsed the controversial legislation following a debate that lasted over 13 hours.

In a post on X, AICC General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated, “The INC will soon be contesting the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Supreme Court.”

He expressed confidence in the party’s ability to resist what he described as the Modi government’s attacks on the principles, provisions, and practices enshrined in the Constitution of India.

The discussion surrounding the Waqf Bill in the Rajya Sabha was marked by strong opposition, with critics labeling the Bill as “anti-Muslim” and “unconstitutional.” The government, however, defended it as a “historic reform” intended to benefit the minority community.

The Rajya Sabha passed the Bill with 128 votes in favor and 95 against it. Earlier, the Lok Sabha had approved the Bill on Thursday, with 288 members supporting it and 232 opposing.

Mr. Ramesh also mentioned that the INC’s challenge to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 is currently under consideration by the Supreme Court.

He noted that the party’s challenge to the 2019 amendments to the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 is also being heard in the Supreme Court.

Additionally, he highlighted that the INC’s challenge regarding the amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules (2024) is pending in the Supreme Court.

Furthermore, he stated that the INC’s intervention aimed at upholding the intent and provisions of the Places of Worship Act, 1991 is also being reviewed by the Supreme Court.
