Prayagraj : The events that transpired during the Maha Kumbh in the sacred city of Prayagraj are indeed unfortunate, raising significant concerns regarding the effectiveness of government operations.
The state administration has branded the event as “Divya Kumbh Bhavya Kumbh,” and government-sponsored advertisements have ensured that this narrative is prominently featured across various news outlets. However, when coverage shifts away from this portrayal, it often highlights the prevailing disorder. Despite the state ministers traveling across the nation to extend invitations to other governments, they have failed to establish adequate arrangements for the basic needs of ordinary devotees, such as accommodation and bathing facilities.
Even after the observance of Mauni Amavasya, many areas within the fairgrounds continue to experience delays in the arrival of essential supplies. Historically, during both the Ardh Kumbh and Kumbh festivals, loudspeakers were strategically placed throughout the fair and along the routes leading to the city to disseminate crucial information to pilgrims and security personnel. Unfortunately, this year, the number of such devices has been insufficient.
As the number of attendees surged, they were directed to holding areas—typically set up in schools, colleges, and open grounds along the route. The failure to implement similar measures this time remains perplexing. While those advocating for a digital Kumbh were eager to receive accolades, they have conspicuously evaded accountability in the face of these challenges.
In examining the causes behind the recent incident, numerous questions arise that demand answers from those affiliated with the government. Following the tragic stampede during the Kumbh in Prayagraj in 1954, a prohibition on VIP protocols was instituted for future events. However, the anticipated enforcement of this ban for the 2025 Kumbh appears to be lacking.
A Deputy Chief Minister has been observed navigating the fairgrounds accompanied by a retinue, causing disruptions as his convoy diverts crowds along the UP pavilion. Additionally, a minister has positioned himself at Sangam Nose, seemingly prepared to join any VIP who may arrive for a ceremonial dip.
The ministers of the Uttar Pradesh government, accompanied by their entourages, are arriving at Sangam Ghat to partake in a ritual dip, which has resulted in difficulties for ordinary devotees attempting to bathe at Sangam Nose.
Members of the Uttar Pradesh government, along with their families and associates, have been observed utilizing their official privileges to take a dip in Sangam. In contrast, individuals who have traveled thousands of kilometers to participate in this sacred act have been redirected to bathe in the Ganges. Numerous individuals are currently residing in government department camps, equipped with German hangars near Arail Ghat, who are neither government employees nor officially recorded, as they are connected to the ministers.
The influx of common people was so significant that not all of the approximately 30 temporary bridges constructed over the river were accessible to pilgrims, resulting in increased congestion on the few open bridges, where devotees were redirected by barricades.
The closure of roads leading to Sangam Ghat prior to Mauni Amavasya, combined with the large number of individuals eager to partake in the Amrit bath after viewing social media reels, contributed to the occurrence of an accident.
The current scenario indicates that for many, particularly the youth, attending the Kumbh has shifted from a matter of faith and devotion to an opportunity for social media content creation. The manner in which this Kumbh has been promoted and broadcasted has prioritized sensational imagery over accurate reporting, showcasing trivial moments rather than the event’s spiritual significance. It is evident that a considerable number of attendees are more interested in leisure and photography than in engaging in Kalpavas.
In the most populous country, demographic data appears to be relevant only while individuals are alive, leaving the question of whether they will be counted posthumously to the divine.
