Hyderabad: BRS leader KT Rama Rao (KTR) issued an “unconditional apology” for his recent remarks about women, which sparked a political uproar in Telangana. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, KTR addressed the controversy that erupted after he spoke about women using the state’s free bus travel scheme, introduced following the Congress’s assumption of power in the state this year.
During a speech to party workers, KTR mentioned that women traveling on these buses could “do break dances” if they wished, and added that the BRS had no objection to women engaging in activities like knitting on the bus, as long as the buses were safe.
KTR’s comments quickly went viral on social media, prompting the Telangana State Women’s Commission (TSCW) to initiate an inquiry.
Telangana Minister Danasari Anasuya, also known as Seethakka, criticized KTR’s comments, questioning his respect for women and asking if he would use the same language for his sister. She emphasized that women are stepping out of their homes not just to work but to contribute to their households’ financial stability, often while managing domestic responsibilities. She argued that these women deserve dignity and respect, not mockery.
The remarks drew widespread condemnation from women’s rights activists, political opponents, and the general public, who took to various platforms to express their disapproval. In response to the mounting backlash, KTR posted an apology on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that he never intended to offend women and expressing regret if his words had caused any harm.
“I am sorry if our sisters were offended by the comments made in the party meeting yesterday. I never meant to offend my sisters,” KTR posted.
The Telangana State Women’s Commission (TSCW), led by Chairperson Sharada Nerella, acknowledged the public outcry and announced its own inquiry into the matter. “The comments made by KT Rama Rao, as widely circulated in the media, are derogatory in nature, especially towards women. The Commission has observed that these remarks have led to widespread discontent and hurt within the community,” Ms. Nerella stated.
