Earthquake hits Tibet

Earthquake: A magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred on Tuesday in the northern foothills of the Himalayas, close to one of Tibet’s most esteemed cities. This seismic event resulted in a minimum of 53 casualties and caused buildings to tremble across neighboring nations, including Nepal, Bhutan, and India.

The earthquake struck at 9:05 a.m. (0105 GMT), with its epicenter identified in Tingri, a rural area that acts as the northern access point to the Everest region. The depth of the quake was reported to be 10 km (6.2 miles) by the China Earthquake Networks Centre, as noted by Reuters.

National broadcaster CCTV reported that at least 53 individuals lost their lives on the Tibetan side of the border.

Tremors were also experienced in the Delhi-NCR region and various areas of North India, including parts of Bihar.

Here are the key updates regarding the earthquake:

  • A 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Nepal generated tremors felt in Delhi-NCR and several regions of North India.
  • The United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that this earthquake occurred at 6:35 a.m., 93 km northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border.
  • The epicenter was situated at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which contribute to the uplift of the Himalayan mountains, significantly altering the elevations of some of the tallest peaks globally.
  • The quake, with a magnitude of 6.8, impacted Dingri County near the Nepal border at 9:05 a.m. (0105 GMT), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
  • China reported that at least 53 fatalities were confirmed following the strong earthquake that affected the Tibet region adjacent to the Nepal border.
As per AP, CCTV mentioned that several communities were located within 5 kilometers (3 miles) of the epicenter, which is 380 kilometers (240 miles) from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.
  • The USGS noted that there have been 10 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater in the vicinity of Tuesday’s quake over the past century.
This earthquake was the most powerful recorded within a 200-kilometer radius in the last five years.
  • In 2015, approximately 9,000 individuals lost their lives, and over 22,000 sustained injuries as a result of a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal, leading to the destruction of more than half a million residences. Nepal is situated on a significant geological fault line, where the Indian tectonic plate converges with the Eurasian plate.
