The court has scheduled a hearing for sentencing arguments on February 18. Sajjan Kumar is currently serving a life sentence for another case related to the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi Cantt. The conviction was issued by Special Judge Kaveri Baweja.
Kumar was brought to the court from Tihar jail for the announcement of the verdict. He was found guilty of the murders of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on the aforementioned date.
Initially, the Punjabi Bagh police station registered the case, but a special investigation team later assumed responsibility for the inquiry.
On December 16, 2021, the court formally charged Kumar after determining that there was a “prima facie” case against him.
What transpired in 1984?
According to the prosecution, an armed mob engaged in extensive looting, arson, and destruction of Sikh properties as retaliation for the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The mob killed Singh and his son, plundered their home, and subsequently set it on fire. The court’s ruling indicated that Kumar not only participated in the mob but also took a leadership role.
